Utah's new NHL team became official Thursday when Smith Entertainment Group completed its transactions to acquire the hockey assets of the now-inactive Arizona Coyotes.
The Salt Lake City-based team still doesn't have an official name yet — fans are voting on six possibilities — but it will be known as the Utah Hockey Club for the 2024-25 season. Utah HC is one of the choices in the latest fan survey.
The club also announced its jersey design and colors for next season.
"The color palette consists of Rock Black, representing the darkness of night in the mountains and the volcanic rock of Utah’s deserts; Salt White, illustrating both the snow on Utah’s peaks and the famous salt flats; and Mountain Blue, a representation of Utah’s rich winter sports history and its clear skies for more than 230 days a year," SEG said in a statement.
The colors are similar to the Utah Jazz, the NBA team also owned by Ryan and Ashley Smith.
Once fans choose the team name, a logo and jersey will be devised for the 2025-26 season.
The Utah Hockey Club will play home games at the Delta Center in downtown Salt Lake City.
The Coyotes are now inactive and can be reactivated as an expansion team if Alex Meruelo can construct a new, state-of-the-art NHL arena within five years.
